Careers
Dear Parent/Carer
‘Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’
Luke 21:34-36
We are quickly moving toward the end of what has been a very busy year for the College. While we reflect on the many challenges 2021 has presented us all, we are drawn toward the opportunities 2022 will provide and I thank our staff who are busy preparing for what will be a great year for us all.
We have now finalised our Wellbeing team for 2022 and I acknowledge the following appointments:

I congratulate all staff and students in obtaining these roles. It will be tremendous for our College to be working with such a dedicated and skilled team that seeks to support students in achieving their personal best in all they do!
We showed our students this week a suggested uniform change in a College designed ‘hoodie’. It is important to access the views of all in our community and so far it has been very positive. Please take the time to look at the design on our website. It has also been presented on various forms of social media - with many pleasing comments.
I had the pleasure to show students the visual representations of the new College Hall. The work on this has commenced and it is due for completion in August, 2022. It is expected that the New Hall and our refurbished Performing Arts Hall will be used by the College and general community at this time.
Finally, I thank all those involved in my 1st year Principal appraisal. This took place on Tuesday 23rd November and the feedback received was encouraging and has provided me with opportunity for continued personal and professional growth in leading St Paul’s Catholic Secondary College, Kempsey.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
Kind regards
Mr David JOHNS B.Ed., Cert. Gifted Ed., Grad. Cert. Adol. Health and Welfare, M.Ed. (Ed Lead), M.Ed. (Theol)

Student Voice
The recent weeks have allowed Mrs Shipton and me, to continue to have very enlightening chats with a range of students regarding their learning. The esteemed Australian educator, Professor John Hattie, has stated that students with a strong sense of student voice, are 7 times more likely to be academically motivated. Professor Hattie bases his research using data which he refers to as effect sizes (ES). Professor Hattie outlines the following regarding student voice:
Student voice. “The visibility of learning from the students’ perspective needs to be known by teachers so that they can have a better understanding of what learning looks and feels like for the students” (Quality of Teaching = 0.44 ES). Also, teachers who develop strong relations with his/her students have a powerful impact (Teacher-Student Relations = 0.72 ES) on student learning. “Building and developing relations with students implies agency, efficacy, respect by the teacher for what the child brings to the class…[and requires teachers to use such skills as] listening, empathy, caring, and having positive regard for others.” And, “Feedback is most powerful when it is from the student to the teacher” (0.75 ES).
Student voice is very important at St Paul’s as we work together supporting the opportunity for our students to improve their learning. Our students are welcomed to outline what are the best ways they find to improve their learning and what are the obstacles and how can we work together to give them the best opportunities. We are discussing further opportunities for our students to provide us feedback towards their learning and which processes are best to allow their voice to be heard (the current educational research supports how critical student voice is to learning; processes allowing celebration of their achievements in all facets of school life; building open relationships empowering teachers and students to ask questions based on mutual respect). We are very proud of our students at St Paul’s, and we seek to continue to nurture students who are positive, ethical, faithful, kind, motivated and resilient; knowing each student and their families and addressing individual needs to allow their full potential to be realised; understanding and living our College Mission so they are ethical and moral members of society.
If you have any questions regarding these matters, please contact me at geoffrey.melville@lism.catholic.edu.au
Mr Geoffrey Melville - Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching
As we continue to reflect on our College policies at St Paul’s we are mindful of what is at the heart of Catholic education; our students who are at the centre of everything we do. The Pastoral Policy at St Paul’s College is integral to the Mission Statement of the College. St Paul’s central aim is to educate the whole person within a Christian community. Thus the focus is upon the total development of students: academically, spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally and morally. Based upon the Gospel values of love, community, tolerance, responsibility and forgiveness, St Paul’s seeks to emphasise the dignity of each person.
In 2022 students will experience smaller numbers in Pastoral Care (PC) time so we can care for your child in and out of the classroom. Your child’s PC teacher will be your child’s advocate at school. They will know your child as a learner and will be your first contact if there are issues of concern. It is our hope that all parents and guardians form a strong bond with your child’s PC teacher, as we know that parents and school relationships are an integral part of a child’s success.
Reminder to Bring Equipment to school.
Mrs Bronwyn Shipton - Assistant Principal - Mission and Wellbeing
Catch the Wave Year 8
This continues during this week for Year 8 students. The Catch the Wave retreat day will be held on site at the College. The retreat day will be delivered by our two wonderful YMO's, Ebaney Cook and Mikayla Greenhalgh.
The Catch the Wave retreat allows for the Year 8 students to have insight into Youth Ministry and a chance to join the CSYMA classes that are taught during Years 9 and 10.
Year 8 parents will soon be emailed an application form for their child to complete. The form provides a course outline and details activities and costs.
Students with an interest in nurturing their faith, while developing skills in the area of peer to peer ministry will be required to complete the application form and submit it to Ms Stuart by Monday 29th November.
SHINE UNPLUGGED
Due to COVID restrictions the Year 9 and 10 CYM Shine Unplugged day has been rescheduled to Term 4 and will be held on site in week 8.
The theme of the day is 'Called to Connection' and will aim to provide students an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus and to invite students to connect with each other. The day will be facilitated by our two wonderful YMO's Ebaney Cook and Mikayla Greenhalgh.
Christmas Hampers
It has become a tradition at St Paul’s for each Pastoral Care Group to collect a hamper of groceries to be presented to St. Vincent de Paul Society at the offertory procession during the final School Mass of the year – the Giving Mass in week 10. Please continue to bring in non-perishable goods.
Parish News
Baptism Preparation Nights
For decades wonderful volunteers who lead the monthly Baptism Preparation nights for the Macleay Valley Parish. This provides a very warm, welcoming and more informal environment for parents preparing for their child/ren to be baptised. It is also a wonderful opportunity for the team members to share their own journey.
The members present in groups of 2 and are on a rotating roster, which in the past has meant 3-4 times a year for half an hour.
The Parish is looking for between 2 and 4 people to join the team and the members can present in groups of 2.
It is very easy and everything you need including a script to follow, is provided. It is a really lovely way to connect with other families in our Parish and they often end up coming to our schools. They are run in the Parish Administration building on the first Wednesday of the month at 6.30pm. They generally only take 30 minutes depending on how many families are at each meeting and they do not begin until March 2022.
The more people that volunteer to run the meetings will mean the less amount of times you will have to run the sessions each year.
The team coordinator is Judy Brady. If you are interested or have questions could you please email Judy at judy.brady@lism.catholic.edu.au.
RED WEDNESDAY – 24 NOVEMBER
Red Wednesday is a day to gather to draw attention to the plight of those who are persecuted and oppressed for their religious beliefs. This is a global initiative of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), a Catholic charity dedicated to the support of suffering and persecuted Christians. The purpose of Red Wednesday is to join together and raise a strong voice in support of the persecuted who are unable to speak freely, and who look to us - their brothers and sisters in Christ - to speak on their behalf.

Returns
It is approaching that time of the year when class textbooks and novels will need to be returned to the Library. This can sometimes become quite complicated, expensive and a very drawn out process, therefore we are asking if parents could please take a moment, in the coming weeks, to ensure their child has returned any items they are currently not using in class. If an item is lost or damaged, could you please make contact with the Library to discuss the next steps.
We cannot stress enough how important it is for textbooks and novels to be either returned or paid for if lost or damaged. Not only are they expensive to replace but also a very valuable learning tool for next year’s students. So a quick double check at home for these items would be greatly appreciated.
To further assist with simplifying this process both your child and yourself should have received an email of the student’s current borrowings last week. Again, if there are any issues please contact the library as outstanding items need to be dealt with before reports are issued.
In regards to Year 12 Textbooks, Year 12 students need to return, on the day of their exam, the textbook /novel associated with that exam subject.
All Year 12 2022 preliminary texts should have now been returned, except for ones that will be needed in 2022. Year 12 2022 are also exempt from returning textbooks, i.e. their Year 12 texts. They will need to keep these till November next year.
NOTE – students will still be able to borrow novels for personal reading during the upcoming holidays.
Mrs Patrice Martin & Mrs Cathy Whalen - Library Technicians
The St Paul’s Community Day will be held on Wednesday 15th December.
Students will take part in many fun and exciting activities during the day and have the opportunity to attend one session at Stoney Aquapark.

Going for a Walk - Evangelina Gately, Year 8
He held my hand as we walked along the path together. I had never thought that I would be walking down a path with THE Kyle Keran. The moon shone white over the grey trees and leaves, illuminating the phosphorescent plants and bugs. The path ventured down and up and around the base of the mountain. We were far from our campsite, but then again, why wouldn't we be? The beauty of Mt Fuji-San is one to behold. The soft browns and greys of the trees gave it an even more appealing appearance, especially when you would come across a stray Sakura Flower or two. The crispy leaves made our footsteps very pronounced within the silence, but whatever could be out there? It is just me, Kyle and the soft breeze of the wind.
His hand tightened on mine when we heard a crunch. We turned to glance, merely to see the sakura flower crushed beneath our feet.. We turned slowly and looked at eachother, me having to struggle with the baby pink scarf wrapped around my head. He gave one of his rare small smiles and then we were off again. We found a small stream by a small meadow, allowing us to sit down and relax. I sat down and removed my shoes, before placing my feet in the crystal-clear water and wiggling my toes. I giggled softly, turning around to witness Kyle looking at me through his glasses with an amused expression on his face.
His dark brown hair lay lopsided on his face while his glasses lay a few inches down his nose. I giggled again at his silliness before turning back to the water, and closing my eyes. The wind was wonderful music, almost like a soothing flute being played harmoniously with the rest of the instruments.
I felt a presence behind me and felt arms wrap around my waist pulling me closer to the owner. As I tilted my head back against Kyle’s chest I looked up to the gleaming moon, and smiled. Kyle glanced down at me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever received from him. He leaned down and I leaned up, as we both met in the middle. Fireworks and cotton candy were nothing compared to the complete and utter bliss and satisfaction I held now. Finally after so long I felt as if we had a stronger bond. We both pulled away to look at eachother, tinted red staining our cheeks. We both smiled at each other, giving a notice that we enjoyed it. Then Kyle pulled me into a hug, not a “ bone crushing” hug, but a soft and childish one. We both got comfortable and looked up to the mountain watching as the clouds danced and the Sakura flowers drifted around the mountain. The Beauty of Mt Fuji, experienced by me and the man that claimed my heart.
We are thrilled to report that 83% of our students enrolled in Year 12, 2021 who applied for Early or Direct Entry to University to study in 2022 have received offers. Some students have been offered multiple offers.
Of our remaining students many have been offered traineeships/apprenticeships for their post school future.
Congratulations to all!
A group of highly motivated and talented students at St Paul's College have designed and developed a hoodie that they hope may be included as a regular part of the College uniform. The students recognised that a more informal College jumper was needed for an extra layer of protection from the cold in the winter months and they selected the hoodie as it keeps both the body and head warm. The group worked with uniform supplier, Team Spirit, to develop the hoodie. The College is undertaking a process of consultation with the student, staff and the broader College community before a decision is made. As such we are giving parents the opportunity to make comment on the design below by emailing kmps@lism.catholic.edu.au
The sample hoodie, worn in the second picture by Ronan O’Loughlin, with the group of students who came up with the concept, incorporates graphics from the image titled "Community Connection", painted by local Dunghutti/Thungutti man and artist, Jason Ridgeway of Blackboycreations.
The students feel that the introduction of the Indigenous design in the school uniform will display to our entire community just how proud we are to acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and that we respect and honour the traditional owners of our land, the Dunghutti/Thungutti people.
To see Jason’s original painting, from which the design was drawn, visit www.kmpslism.catholic.edu.au/news
Each year our Year 12 Textiles & Design students need to complete a Major Textiles Project (MTP). This project showcases a culmination of their skills and allows them to focus on an area of their choice. As well as completing a practical project, students also submit a folio documenting their process of design and manufacture. Students have the opportunity to use Adobe InDesign for their folio and this allows them to develop skills in an industry based program. The class this year showed remarkable resilience as their lessons were disrupted by flood and Covid-19 lockdowns. Despite this they managed to create these magnificent textile items. Congratulations to them all!

Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza success
Recently the College Ag Team entered 8 animals in the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza carcass competition. The animals have been prepared by members of the Ag Team. Due to COVID restrictions we were unable to attend the competition in person which is unfortunate for the students as they have put in such a great deal of work to prepare these animals.
With the generous support of the O'Donnell family and Oakland Park Angus we were able to transport the cattle to Scone for the competition using their truck. One of our steers placed third in the live judging, with two other animals placing third and fourth in the carcass judging.
Most of these animals were bred on the Mid North Coast, or were purchased on farm or from local sales. St Paul's College is certainly getting into the top rankings in these competitions and this has been assisted by the expert cattle selection by our parents, Tim McCarthy and Clinton Shields who purchased some of the animals on behalf of the College at local cattle sales.
Multi Species Cover Crops
The recent rain has been a great boost to our pastures. We have recently sown a couple of fodder crops with the intention that these crops will act not only as a source of feed but will help to restore our soil. The crop we sowed last week is a mixture of forage sorghum, forage millet, cowpeas, fenugreek, lablab, sunflower, mustard, turnips, chicory, lucerne and buckwheat.
A big thanks to Kevin and Natalie Weismantel for picking up the seed from its source in Echuca, Victoria on behalf of the College. Thanks also to Lawrence Weismantel for using his tractor and disc seeder to establish the crop in the paddock adjacent to North Street. We were lucky enough to have around 30mm of rain the night after all of the seed was sown.
Fencing Projects
The farm assistant, Nigel Flanagan, and several Year 10 students have been busy constructing fences at the rear of the College Farm. So far they have built around 1200m of fence, repairing some of the boundary and building an internal division fence so that we can control our grazing to a greater level.
Cattle Purchase
The Francis farm purchased three Angus heifers at the recent Kempsey Stock and land sale. These heifers are all pregnancy tested in calf and are due to carve in March. We have decided to disband our Devon stud as it was getting difficult to purchase good quality genetics and sale of our calves achieved a lesser sale price then we currently get for Angus calves.
We have also purchased an Angus bull from Bongongo Angus Stud in Coolac New South Wales. This bull is 24 months old and was transported to Walcha by his previous owners at no cost to the college. We have since relocated him to the Francis farm where he has been introduced to the herd. His calves will appear in July 2022.
Mrs VonHoldt's Year 7 Food Technology class have been busy designing and preparing a dish that could be included in a healthy lunchbox for an adolescent. This lunchbox item was designed after learning about preparation and cooking techniques to maintain nutrient value, the six nutrients and the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Well done, Year 7 Food Technology!
Year 7 Technology students as part of their Engineering rotation have designed, shaped and finally raced their own CO2 canister powered cars. Using the newly purchased Denford Air Trace system, students vie for aerodynamic superiority and the ultimate prize of finishing with the fastest balsa wood car. Ongoing testing, development and refinements are the keys to dragster success. Well done to all!
Workers Urgently Needed
We need volunteers to help in our canteen once a week, fortnight or month. No special skills required. If you can make a salad wrap, toastie or put some drinks in the fridge, your help will be greatly appreciated. All welcome - mums, dads, nannas, pops, aunts and uncles. Should you be able to spare just a few hours, please contact me.

UAC – A Message for Parents of Year 12 students: next steps for uni offers
Congratulations on supporting your Year 12 student through a challenging final year of school! While they're focusing on their exams, stay in the loop on application deadlines and offers with this guide to what's coming up over the next few weeks.
Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS)
Applications for SRS closed on 19 September and the first offers were released today, 12 November.
If your child submitted an SRS application and was successful, they would have received an unconditional offer or a conditional offer.
An unconditional offer means that, apart from completing their HSC, they have no further requirements to meet. They can accept it knowing they have a place at uni waiting for them.
A conditional offer means they must meet additional criteria (eg a minimum ATAR). The institution will tell them what these are in the conditional offer email.
If your child receives an unconditional offer to one of their highest preferences but wants to be considered for all other preferences in later offer rounds, they should:
accept their offer to the course
move the course down to the bottom of their preference list or remove it entirely. As long as they have accepted their unconditional offer, they can't lose it.
If they receive a conditional offer, they need to leave the course preference in their UAC application. Then, on 26 January (January Round 2), they'll receive an unconditional offer to the course that is highest in their list of preferences and for which they are eligible and competitive enough. This could be the course for which they received the conditional offer or it could be another course that is higher in their list.
They can only receive one unconditional offer in each round, so they always need to keep the course they most want to study at the top of their list.
Institution-specific SRS criteria
Additional SRS offers
Institutions have the option to make further unconditional offers in November Round 2, December Round 1 and January Round 1. If your child forgot to include one of their preferred SRS courses in their application, or put their course preferences in the wrong order, they will have another chance to get an early offer. https://www.uac.edu.au/media-centre/news/guide-for-parents

But what about the cost of your course? In the same way as it is helpful to understand the structure of your program and its graduate opportunities, it also helps to know exactly where you stand on the costs front. The cost of your education and how you pay for it vary depending on a few factors, which will be explained below. https://www.gooduniversitiesguide.com.au/study-information/funding-your-education/degree-costs-and-loans

University of Newcastle - Startup Stories - Justin Bain (3ME)
1 December 2021. 8am to 9am
3ME has been a Hunter based engineering business for over a decade, but it wasn’t until 2016 when Justin Bain and his new ownership team came in and realised there was potential in the electrification of underground equipment. In the proceeding years the Justin and the team have worked hard to develop a powerful, scalable, lithium-ion battery system to replace the diesel-powered engines used in large industrial vehicles in mining and defence.
The result is the Bladevolt. It is made up of a series of blades in a hard battery box basically. Each blade is also remotely monitored by the 3ME team so when it’s time for maintenance they can be swapped out and if an adverse
event occurs, 3ME can pinpoint the problem. The blade can then be pulled out by virtually anyone, replaced and the damaged blade sent to 3ME for a service.
That switch to a cleantech company and the Bladevolt release has led to a huge couple of weeks this year for 3ME. The team have taken out top spot in this year’s AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list in the agriculture and mining sector, the company also scored a $15 million investment from the Australian Business Growth Fund.
Join us for Startup Stories and hear how Justin and the 3ME team are building Australia’s sovereign capability in defence and learn how they’re leveraging their new funding to move into new markets. https://www.newcastle.edu.au/events/research-and-innovation/startup-stories-justin-bain-3me

ANU How gravity rules the world
27 November 2021. 2pm
Gravity is a fundamental force that keeps the universe glued together.
At the same time, gravity is strong enough to prevent you from floating off into space from Earth, and weak enough that a young star can defeat gravity by picking up an apple from the ground.
It is weird. We will explore the extreme large-scale Universe by observing the Sun to see how massive objects like the Sun and black holes bend and warp space with a fabric spacetime table that we will construct with you. https://www.anu.edu.au/events/how-gravity-rules-the-world
ANU - Is AI Good for the Planet?
30 November 2021. 6pm
We often think of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a thing of the immediate future. We are constantly bombarded by slogans of AI coming to change our life, whether we like it or not. We are reassured it will be a better life. A better capitalism. A better environment. From smart devices, to home voice assistants, image recognition and translation, AI is offered as the solution to the greatest challenges of this age. This portrayal of AI as a benevolent deity has a crucial effect: it obfuscates the materiality of the infrastructures and devices that are central to its functioning. In her new book Is AI Good for the Planet? (Polity, 2021) Benedetta Brevini asks us to think about AI in a different, and more material way than most of us have in the past.
