Dear Parent/Carer
“And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Mark 15: 1-39
We are now entering the significant time of Holy Week where, as Christians, we walk with our community in the footsteps of Jesus from his suffering and death to his resurrection. It is hoped that this time of Lent has been a blessing for you all and may your relationship with God, self, family and friends as well as those in our community be enriched across this time of prayer and reflection.
I acknowledge the wonderful work of Ms Jo Day and her team in coordinating the NAPLAN testing for our Year 7 and Year 9 students. The NAPLAN diagnostic testing process seeks to provide data on how our College is tracking with the Literacy and Numeracy domains, as compared to other students across Australia. The data provided will be useful in determining how we can best support activities in the classroom that will build further capacity in all our students. The level of authentic engagement of our students in this testing process was very much valued.
Across last week Mr Stephen Pares our Catholic School Office Regional Services Leader, held a gathering with Fr James, Mr Guy Campbell - Principal at St Joseph’s Primary in Kempsey and Mr Geoff Melville, Assistant Principal - Mission, to talk about Mission within our Catholic schools and how we may be able to further develop the great work that is already being done. We continue to be a strong educational facility that is proudly Catholic and this will always be our point of difference. As a Catholic College we seek to open students' hearts and minds by what we present to all students everyday of every week through what they see and hear in the classroom, throughout the playground and across the school day. This can only be effectively achieved when alignment exists between our schools and our parish and I thank Steve for supporting this ongoing process.
I was able to attend the P & F AGM on Monday 11 March and I firstly wish to acknowledge the efforts of the many long standing parent/carer representatives who are currently a part of this group. The money raised by their initiatives has been significant and the resources and opportunities provided have been very much appreciated. What we are challenged by now are new members of our College family who have as yet not considered joining this extremely important group within the College. This group not only raises funds but assists in advocating for families, provides observations on policy and process as well as tabling issues needing consideration that may be gaining ‘energy’ with the local or regional community. I would ask at this time for any parent/carer who may be interested in contributing to our P & F to initially contact the College so further discussion can take place. A strong P & F often aligns to a strong school culture and we need more parent/carer voice to ensure this into the future.
This week we had many of our Leaders of Learning attend a Writing Symposium in Sydney. This was facilitated through the work of Mrs Amy Tovey and Mrs Kate Fullbrook and I thank them and the Catholic Schools Office, Lismore for their financial contribution to subsidise attendance. The literacy focus at the College is a strategic goal across 2024 and having our Leaders of Learning attend will further ensure alignment across all subject areas . We are most excited by what was learnt and ultimately how it will add value to all our students in the weeks and months ahead. I thank all the staff involved, those who covered lessons as a result of staff absences and those who attended the experience and were required to be away from family and friends overnight. This was very much valued!
Wishing you all a safe and peaceful weekend as preparations are made for the week ahead at this significant time in our liturgical calendar.
Kind regards
Mr David JOHNS B.Ed., Cert. Gifted Ed., Grad. Cert. Adol. Health and Welfare, M.Ed. (Ed Lead), M.Ed. (Theol)
Principal
Students should be at school every day during the school Term, right from the first day until the last. Family holidays should be taken during the school holidays, not during Term time. In cases where absences are unavoidable, parents/carers are asked to make contact with the College in advance of the absence and to work with teachers to ensure that students catch up with missed material and that school processes are followed for any missed assessment tasks.
Year 12 Assessments
Congratulations to the Year 12 students for undertaking their assessments this week. Despite the sickness going around, they attended where possible and really tried their best. Well done Year 12. The feedback from these tasks will be valuable as you move forward with your HSC course. Only 207 days until your HSC exams begin!
Year 11 Assessment Block
Weeks 9 and 10 see the Year 11 students undertaking their assessments too. Please make sure you are all in attendance throughout this period and remember that a doctors certificate, or a telehealth certificate from a doctor must be provided if you are not. Best of luck to Year 11!
NAPLAN
A huge thank you to Ms Jo Day for all of her work administering the NAPLAN exams and to Mr Roger Shipton for his support. Thank you to the parents who ensured their children had headphones for the period, we appreciate your support. The valuable data collected by NAPLAN ensures we know what we need to be doing as a College to move students forward.
Drop Everything and Read!
We have had three rounds of Drop Everything and Read in the College so far this term and with huge success! Thank you to the students who are consistently bringing reading material to school. I hope they are also reading these books with more enthusiasm at home. All of the research tells us that good readers are successful in their schooling endeavours!
“...if kids get off to a good start in reading, they improve their vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, grammar and knowledge. This makes reading easier, which in turn makes them likely to read more, which makes reading easier again. It’s a spiral of exponential increase, the greatest tool ever created for self-education. Kids who learn to read quickly and easily not only become better readers, they learn more – more facts, more about lives unlike their own, more empathy. In short, their lives have more potential for good outcomes.”

Parent/Teacher Interviews
The booking system on Compass is open for Parent Teacher Interviews for next Wednesday 27 March. Please book in to see the teachers to discuss your child's academic progress. This is a great opportunity to connect with staff and grasp an understanding of what your child is doing in school. Thank you to those parents who filled in the survey last year on ways for us to improve the evening. We hope you will see some improvements as a result!
Please reach out if you have any questions about the learning for your students.

Celebrating our wonderful Aboriginal students at St Paul’s in 2024
The recognition and support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families is a central aspect of life at St Paul’s. The College has been involved in a wonderful partnership with many Dungutti Elders and families from the Macleay Valley for many years and in 2024 we celebrate 60 Aboriginal students and their families and their contribution to our community. The importance of acknowledging and supporting the Aboriginal culture at St Paul’s is founded in our 2024-2026 School Annual Improvement Plan, which states that it is a Faith Rite of Passage serving as a foundational framework for students seeking active engagement in ministry, mission and supporting the Aboriginal culture of St Paul's College. There are a number of important initiatives the College is working with our Aboriginal students including the renovation of Room 24 as an Aboriginal gathering space for students and staff.
The College employs two wonderful Aboriginal Education Workers (AEW), Mrs Linda Pogson and Mr Dre Barker, who work one on one with the three different student stages weekly. In 2024, the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Office has supported the College with the appointment of an additional full time teaching staff member and ex-student, Mr Adam Clay, who works within the Aboriginal Education Team at the College. The AEW staff work directly with the Catholic Schools Office under the direction of Aunty Doreen Flanders and Rebeca Tibbey and later this year the entire St Paul’s staff will be engaged with the Catholic Schools Office Crossing Cultures Hidden Histories during 2024 where the staff will develop an understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages so that they can promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The Aboriginal Education Team is currently interviewing all Aboriginal students and their families and framing their 2024 Goori Career Action Plans. These personalised learning plans (PLPs) are reviewed throughout Semester 2 with individual student meetings with the College AEWs and further meetings in review with families. These will be completed by the end of Term 1. The Aboriginal Staff Team is working with the College's Executive around the undertaking of cultural events, which will be engaging for both our Indigenous students and the wider College community, for activities such as Sorry Day/Reconciliation week, NAIDOC week and Indigenous Literacy day. These proposals will look to incorporate Indigenous culture/history, as well as tapping into the energy and enthusiasm of our elders/community/families and students. The idea behind all of these initiatives is to make a statement about the rich culture that exists and allow all stakeholders to contribute and have success in their small part of cultivating and passing on their experiences/beliefs.
One of the very pleasing aspects of working with our Aboriginal students at St Paul’s this Term is viewing their excellent work ethic in the classroom and their outstanding attendance rate. Across our group of students the Term 1 attendance rate has been 94%, which is significantly above the overall whole College attendance rate and supports a great start to the 2024 school year.
Mr Geoffrey Melville - Assistant Principal - Mission and Wellbeing
With Easter fast approaching, I acknowledge any extra prayer or acts of service from members of our community throughout Lent. May we celebrate the ultimate sacrifice shown by Jesus Christ as He took our sins to the cross on Good Friday, then defeated death and sin on Easter Sunday.
As you probably remember, Jesus gathered with his disciples at the Last Supper to celebrate Passover. His Death and Resurrection align with Passover. Still today the date for Easter moves and aligns with the same dates as Passover. Why is this important? Because Jesus is the new Paschal Lamb that was sacrificed and ushered in a New Covenant.
I pray that the Easter weekend is full of quality time with friends, family and Christ. Please see below for the Easter Mass times in the Macleay and Nambucca valleys.

Year 11 Assessment weeks
The Stage 6 Assessment Handbook can be found on Compass, under School Documentation, Student Resources, Assessments and then Assessment handbook. This handbook provides the students with information regarding the submission of assessments, late penalties, plagiarism, the use of AI and NESA policies. Attendance the week before and during the assessment block is compulsory. Any absences during the assessment block must be accompanied by a misadventure form with supporting evidence. If it is for an illness, a medical certificate from a GP is required. You are also required to attend school throughout the entirety of the assessment period. If you are absent you are required to provide evidence with a completed misadventure form.
The Year 11 assessment schedule can be found here.
Writing Symposium
This week, all Leaders of Learning and the Learning and Teaching team flew to Sydney to attend the Writing Symposium on Monday held by Catholic Schools NSW that focused on writing across the curriculum in Stage 4 and 5. The conference focused on how to implement evidence-based writing practices that were presented by leaders in education. As all subjects are undergoing a curriculum reform across the next few years, St Paul's College will take the knowledge gained to change and enhance our own learning programs to include these writing strategies to improve our student's writing abilities.
Mrs Amy Tovey - Leader of Curriculum
St Paul's 5-4-5 Reading Challenge
To encourage an increase in student participation in the wonderful world of reading, we are heavily promoting our in-house reading challenge this year, which has been running alongside the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) over the last few years. NOTE – students are still welcome to enter the PRC. If they call into the library, we can assist them in registering.
As part of this Challenge, each month we are giving away two canteen vouchers. To enter the challenge, students just need to fill in details about one book they have read that month. The link to enter is provided HERE. The link is also available in student emails and on the College library website. If students don't want to fill in the questionnaire via the link, we also have a sheet in the library where they can manually add their name and the book they have read. If you know your child has read a book this month it would be wonderful if you could help support this promotion by mentioning to them that the first draw will be on Thursday 28 March.
EASTER PROMOTION
Instead of our annual lucky borrowers Easter draw, this year we are running a Library knowledge quest as a fun way to actively engage students in learning how to find library books, how they are organised on the shelf and how and where to find available resources such as ebooks and Clickview videos. ALL entries receive an Easter egg. Unfortunately it is only a small one but they do say good things come in small packages!
Parents can help support these two promotions by ‘promoting’ them to their child/children which in turn may lead to some great discussions on reading, their likes and dislikes, your likes and dislikes etc. What a wonderful thought!

Lamont Standing Order
We have just received our first monthly shipment from our regular book supplier, LAMONT. These books are purchased at a discount price and are supplied with monthly reviews and summaries. If you or your child are interested in reading this month’s reviews, below is a pdf version of each book received.
Overdues
We have had an overwhelming response to our overdue emails sent out recently but there is small number still outstanding. I will send out another reminder next week to both students and parents who still have outstanding books from last year. These books urgently need returning so we can avoid having to debit their replacement cost from your account at the end of this Term.
Wishing you all a very happy and holy Easter.
Kind Regards
Mrs Patrice Martin, Mrs Cathy Whalen & Ms Karen Irvine- Library Assistants

NSW Schools Mountain Bike Series
Congratulations to the St Paul's students who participated in their first NSW Schools Mountain Bike Series round held in Kempsey on 8 March. Out of 22 secondary school teams that participated, St Paul's team collected enough points to hold on to second place in the Cross Country and third place in the Funduro - a fantastic result! Well done to Noah Bailey, Tjala Rosenstein, Bella-Rose Potter and Harrison Bailey who achieved top 10 results in both the Cross Country and Funduro.
NSW Rugby 10’s Competition
Last week our students travelled to Crescent Head rugby fields to compete in the NSW Rugby 10’s school competition. Congratulations to all students and teams on their behaviour and attitude on the day.
Under 16's Boys Team
Open Boys Team
Our Open boys team saw success throughout the day. The first game was tough against BDC, who only showed up with 7 men. With some disruption to our start and a few costly mistakes, the boys went down 10-5 in a fast hit-out.
Their second game was against MacKillop. Our discipline shone through during this game, with little mistakes made and huge defensive efforts against the MacKillop boys. We managed to get two early tries in the first half with some unbelievable offloads and kicking game. Our defense remained solid in the second half, and we put one more try on the boys through some nifty backline plays. The boys ended up the second game 17-0.
The third game was a tough hit out against Dorrigo. They were fast and up for it, but our middle forwards held strong and we waited for errors and capitalised on them. Once again defense was excellent from all the boys and the movement of the ball throughout the backs was all class. The final score ended up 17-5.
Overall the boys won 2 of their 3 three games and now progress through to the Regional Finals on Friday 5 April. Good luck at this next level.
Mr Heath Needs - Coach
Open Boys Team
Open Girls Team
The tremendous skill and commitment shown by the Under 18's girls side was evident in their displays at the NSW Rugby Union Mid-North 10 aside fixtures last week. I had the pleasure of coaching many of these fine young ladies in 2023 and their skill and improvement continues to shine. The addition of many outstanding Year 12 players meant that we produced a formidable group. There were fantastic performances in our three games from Ella Mainey, Taylah Moffitt, Pippa Nugent, Kayla Duroux-Lancaster, Jade Oliver and Mia Rielly from Year 12, these students are great athletes with strong rugby skills. It was a pleasure opportunity to again coach some fantastic Year 11 students who continue to make progress with their rugby, including Mia Quinn, Ciara Peters, Marlie van Hugten, Emily Stuart, Isla Lennon, Lionnel Nyurka and Courtney Minns. Congratulations to all players and I greatly look forward to our next games later in the year.

Under 14's Boys Team
There was great excitement at St Paul’s as over 30 young men strode the Cannons fields for a full day of rugby fixtures last week. We have been training for many weeks, with Year 7 vs Year 8 and 9 students where great skill and support play was evident. It was a tremendous thrill to watch our young warriors play with such skill and poise at the NSW Rugby Mid-North Coast 10's. I am proud to list the students below and congratulate them for each of their performances, both sides had impressive wins and some close losses. At the end of the day the St Paul’s spirit carried through where in most games we were outsized but not outskilled or tenacious. Again, I look forward to working with these fine young men for many years in the development of their rugby at St Paul’s, special mention to Flynn Mainey and Lucas Chow for their leadership on the day.

Clear Minds, Healthy Lives: Choose Vape Free
Vaping continues to be a concerning issue for families, schools and communities who are committed to the health and wellbeing of young people. The government has introduced new laws that will ban the importation of vapes, including refillable products, from 1 March 2024, unless importers hold a licence and these vapes will only be sold in pharmacies to users with a prescription. However, current stockpiles and illegal sales will continue to pose a threat to the health of those young people who choose to vape.
Parents and schools can work together to support young people to make healthy choices and we encourage parents to be part of St Paul's campaign to promote the message, Clear Minds, Healthy Lives: Choose Vape-Free.
Have some conversations with your child about vaping. Some conversation starters could include:
- Are a lot of kids vaping at your school? Are your friends vaping?
Be sure you don’t react, just listen. - What do you think about vaping?
You may hear your child say that vaping is harmless. It’s important to share some good information with your child about the impacts of vaping. - Do you know what is in vapes?
Share with them that they’ve tested vapes and they do not contain only water vapour and flavouring. Vapes can contain very high levels of nicotine and other toxic chemicals that damage lungs.
Ms Fiona Stuart - Leader of Pastoral Care
Please be assured that all volunteers and staff members hold a current Working with Children Check and are regularly in-serviced regarding Duty of Care and Mandatory Reporting requirements.
Students and staff from St Paul's will be participating in ANZAC Day marches and wreath laying services held at Kempsey, South West Rocks, Macksville and Crescent Head on Thursday 25 April. Please could all students/staff who plan to attend one of the ANZAC Day events in the area complete this form as soon as possible to assist with planning. Further details about the events will be communicated towards the end of Term.
Students, staff and families are also invited to attend the ANZAC Day Mass at All Saints Catholic Church, Kempsey at 9am on Thursday 25 April.
St Paul's Year 12 students attended a presentation by Melissa McGuinness from YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety last week, which is a highly acclaimed initiative and the winner of the Australian Road Safety Award for school programs. The program extends beyond a cautionary tale, by positively uplifting young drivers and passengers to protect their families and their communities from the preventable tragedy of road trauma. Participants are equipped to exchange expectations, commitments and permissions to speak up and to act in moments that matter. They reflect on the connections between their intentions, their choices, their actions and the people they profess to protect and to love.
In 2012, YOU CHOOSE founders, Melissa and Peter McGuinness' 18 year-old son, Jordan, made driving choices which caused the loss of four innocent young lives. Jordan also died in the crash. Since 2017, the program has been facilitated to approximately 200 000 teens. Thanks to Coastline Credit Union for sponsoring this community initiative.
Some responses/feedback from Year 12 students:
- I feel that from the perspective of a mother, it was incredibly insightful especially from her experience. I don’t think people realise the consequences and risks from a choice that could be easily prevented and she delivered that message throughly.
- It was a very powerful speech that hit home as I could relate to losing a loved one because they made a dumb and wrong choice. During the speech, I was mainly impacted by how quickly Jordans' legacy and memory will be of the one bad choice he made and that's how he will permanently be seen in the view of the public and the victim's family.
- When the video played of the daughter speaking at her older brothers funeral that felt really significant for me as I have younger brothers and I’d never want to put them in that position.
- Think before you do anything. You don't know how quickly everything ends but just take your time, enjoy life. Don't hurt the people around you, the people you love, all because you didn't think your actions through.
- A drivers license is a privilege, not a toy.
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Phoebe Laws, who has been selected as one of 14 players to represent Australia in the under 17 India Cricket Tour. Phoebe leaves on Saturday 13 April for the 12 day tour where she will play a series of one-day and T20 format games in addition to training with the Indian Development Squads. We wish you the best of luck Phoebe!
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Ava Ryan, for her continued success as wicket keeper/RH Batter of the NSW Combined Catholic College Cricket team who won the 2024 NSW All Schools State Championships last month. Ava has played for the NSWCCC Cricket team for the last 3 years and this was a fantastic result for her final representation with the team. Well done Ava!
St Paul's Year 12 Advanced English students travelled to Sydney last week to see a performance of Shakespeare's King Richard III at the Seymour Centre. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the text as it was brought to life through performance. Thanks to Ms Martin, Ms Igerl and Mr Robinson for accompanying the students.
St Paul's College is proud to support The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award.
This global framework provides young Australians with the opportunity to achieve an internationally recognised certificate, through doing the things they love. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves and earn rightful recognition of the extra-curricular activities so many students are already doing. Students create their own goals and throughout the year complete 4 main sections:
- Skills - unleash talents, broaden abilities and interests.
- Voluntary Service - Connect with the community and provide service to others.
- Physical Recreation - Improve physical fitness and wellbeing by getting active.
- Adventurous Journey - Team building inspired through adventure, building resilience and teamwork skills along the way.
