OUSTANDING RESULTS FOR ST PAUL’S COLLEGE HSC STUDENTS

The Principal of St Paul’s College, David Johns, has commended the Year 12 Class of 2022 who have achieved pleasing results despite challenging external circumstances across the last few years. 

“Strong performances in a variety of subject areas, along with the high number of students who have been offered University Early Entry, apprenticeships or full-time work across the region, demonstrates what an impressive group of students they are. We are very proud of them and wish them every success into the future”, said David.

Top achievers
Congratulations to Eric Northey who achieved the top ATAR of 90.25. Eric scored very strongly in both Mathematics Extension 1 & 2, Physics and IPT and Eric’s result will allow him to pursue his long-term goals in tertiary education through the Australian Defence Forces.

Zoe Ahearn was another excellent performer in the HSC with five results in Band 5 & 6 including 93 in Ancient History. Zoe wishes to follow in the footsteps of her wonderful teachers by pursuing a career in secondary teaching in 2023.

Zoe Delimihalis scored outstanding examination results all Band 5 or above, Zoe is keen to pursue a career in journalism.

St Paul’s Acceleration Program results
Ten students from Year 11, who are in the College’s Acceleration Program, achieved excellent results in the HSC.

Nat Fletcher scored a mark of 47/50 in Mathematics Extension 1, following his previous Band 6 results in Mathematics and Investigating Science in 2021 and 2022.

Isaac Gorline-Singleman scored strong Band 5 results in Mathematics and Studies of Religion 1 unit, Patrick Preston scored E3 results in Mathematics Extension 1 and 2 unit while Samantha Brenton, Ruby Byrne, Olivia Dunbar, Zoe King, Drew Lancaster, Ellie Lane, Abelia Pratt scored strong Band 5 results in Studies of Religion 1 unit. These students are well placed to forge through their HSC in 2023 following these experiences in HSC subjects this year.

A number of subjects (23) producing Band 5 or 6 results: Ancient History, Biology, Community and Family Studies, Earth & Environmental Science, English Standard, English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Food Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Mathematics Standard 2, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Physics, Studies of Religion 1 unit, Studies of Religion 2 unit, Textiles and Design, Visual Arts, VET Hospitality, VET Primary Industries.

 A number of subjects (11) scored above the state percentages in Band 5 and 6: Ancient History, Community and Family Studies, Earth & Environmental Science, English Extension 2, Food Technology, Information Processes and Technology, Mathematics Extension 2, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Visual Arts, VET Hospitality, VET Primary Industries.

The achievements of more than 100 St Paul's College students, from Years 7 to 11, were celebrated with awards and certificates at a ceremony at the College on Wednesday 14 December.

STUDENT LED ASSEMBLY FOR A GOOD CAUSE

St Paul's Year 12 Student Leaders took on the challenge of planning, coordinating and running the College assembly on Wednesday 30 November in order to promote the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hamper appeal. To encourage Christmas spirit, students and staff could wear Christmas clothes and accessories.

The assembly was a huge success with over 50 Christmas hamper baskets collected which will be presented at the College's annual Giving Mass on Tuesday 6 December. These items will then be distributed to those in need within the Macleay Valley by the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP).

The SVDP is an organisation committed to actively and passionately speaking out against poverty and promoting equality on behalf of all people. Every year the parish community rallies behind St Vincent de Paul in their preparation and distribution of Christmas hampers. A number of families throughout the Macleay valley are unable to afford a Christmas celebration. This year, with the generosity of St Paul's students, families and staff, these Christmas hampers will be donated to those who are less fortunate, allowing them to experience a joyful Christmas.

 

POWER OF ENGINEERING EVENT

On 10 November, 29 St Paul's students from Year 8-10 attended an event in Maitland organised by the Power of Engineering (POE) which is a not for profit organisation established to connect Universities and Industry with school students who may be considering a career in an Engineering field.

The event is unique in that it is fully funded by industry partners and is organised by the POE who coordinate the buses, venue, meals, graduate presenters, keynote speaker and industry site visits.

The keynote presentation was given by a Project Engineer who works for Besix Watpac, the firm responsible for massive projects including the world's tallest skyscraper the "Burj Khalifa" in Dubai, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge across the Brisbane River and numerous other large infrastructures such as stadiums. She spoke about her career path, all of the amazing projects she has overseen over the last 27 years including the newly constructed Frederickton to Eungai Rail section of the Pacific Highway and 16 major bridge projects.

Following this the students were divided into 3 groups with students from Maitland Grossman High school and Warners Bay to undertake two STEM challenges. These included making and testing a bionic hand and devising a water filter for a particular budget depending on the country allocated, as a real world simulation of third world conditions. St Paul's students made the most successful bionic hand which was able to carry several objects over a set distance. These sessions were run by recent engineering graduates from the University of Newcastle and Queensland Institute of Technology.

After a short drive to the industry tour venue, students were lucky enough to spend an hour with a company called AMPcontrol which is an Australian firm that has grown significantly since its inception to now employ more than 1000 people, with 3 locations across Australia and a gross turnover in excess of $60 million. This firm employs a host of engineers and specialises in designing and constructing electronics to make underground mining safer, including gas testing, industrial earth leakage devices and a range of other projects including the development of an electric/diesel hybrid engine for boats. The students had to gear up in high Vis and safety glasses and along the tour were shown every major aspect of the business from manufacturing, logistics, electronics, software engineering to what subjects to focus on at school.

The students came away with real world exposure to what Engineering entails and the huge diversity of roles, large projects and the entry points and pathways through this field including trades, Tafe diplomas, degrees and an appreciation that this field is in huge demand offering rewarding career opportunities. The students were excellent ambassadors for St Paul's College and we thank their parents/carers for supporting their attendance.

2023 SCHOOL LEADERS HONOURED

In a special ceremony on 20 October the student body of St Paul’s College, Kempsey welcomed their 2023 College leaders. 

Special guests included St Paul’s College ex-student the Hon. Pat Conaghan, MP, Fr James Foster and local Council member Alexandra Wyatt.   Uncle Fred Kelly conducted the Smoking Ceremony and Year 10 student Mahlia Hoskins welcomed families, students and guests to Country.

The Year 12 Pastoral Coordinator, Ms Emma Tamblyn, announced that Olivia Dunbar and Isaac Gorline-Singleman had been elected as the 2023 College Captains.

“Olivia and Isaac are outstanding role models for our College and we have every confidence that they will make a positive impact in our College and wider community”, said Emma. 

Emma also announced other College student leadership positions.

School Leaders
Four School Leaders were elected to be positive influences and to effect change in the College.

Brooke Daniels will focus on the College Mission.  Harry Askew will focus on improving sport and well-being opportunities for students while Lawson Moffitt will look at opportunities to improve the physical environment.  Tayla Hiscock’s portfolio of 'Community' will see her promoting better mental health and to build community among staff and students.

Student Voice Leaders
Student Voice Leaders will be responsible for enhancing the experience of the new Year 7 group they begin their journey with St Paul's in 2023.  The Student Voice Leaders are Jasmine Callaway, Hunta Crilley, Jade Maclean, Shelby Mitchell and Justin Groundwater.

House Spirit Leaders
The House Spirit Leaders are responsible for working with the House Coordinators in promoting engagement in all school activities including swimming, the Athletics Carnival, Cross Country and charity work.  The elected House Spirit Leaders are Breanca Martin (Farrelly), Max Farrell (Edmund) Coen Rogers (MacKillop) and Nicholas Kenny (McAuley).

FUTURE MICHELIN STAR CHEFS?

St Paul's Catholic College Year 12 Hospitality students demonstrated their amazing skills in the kitchen with a luncheon for which any diner in the Macleay would have been happy to pay top dollars.

The three course luncheon was held to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding support the students had received from their teachers and parents throughout their senior studies. 

Chosen by the students the menu included Cheese Filled Arancini balls,  South American inspired Pulled Pork Burgers with Corn Ribs and a selection of either Chocolate Mud Cake with White Chocolate Sauce or Sticky Date Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce. 

Not only did the students have to design the menu but also had to plan the portion size, order the food, decide on the presentation of the food and design and decorate the room. 

College Principal, David Johns, said he was very impressed with all aspects of the luncheon.  

"Special thanks to the Year 11 Hospitality Class which stepped in to finish off the cooking, plating and cleaning so that the Year 12 Hospitality students could enjoy the meal with guests who included Father James, their parents and teachers," said David. 

David also thanked Hospitality teacher Aidhan Fahey.  "Aidhan your work with these students and the work of the team that assisted you and the students are a credit to the College".

CHLOE IS HEADED TO SAMOA TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA

Chloe has excelled in various sports including cricket where she played for NSW as a fast bowler.  After a shoulder injury she switched to Rugby.  Chloe’s father, who played most of his rugby in Canterbury in New Zealand, has been her greatest supporter and trusted advisor throughout her sporting career.

Chloe has combined her sporting achievements with her studies and is in the final years of her teaching degree.  She will be back in Kempsey soon undertaking her teaching prac at St Joseph’s, Kempsey.

Chloe’s mother, Ricki, who manages the College Canteen, said that St Paul’s has seen some amazing rugby athletes who have represented Australia including Zac Hough, Darby Lancaster, Triston Reilly and Chloe.  

“As a small town we should be proud of the sheer dedication and focus these kids have displayed to follow their dreams and represent their county”, said Ricki.

GOAL IS TO PLAY FOR AUSTRALIA

Three young athletes from St Paul’s Catholic College are making an impact in local and regional cricket competitions.  Recently selected for Cricket NSW Academy’s North Coastal Zone Female Program 2022 Ciara Peters (Year 9) and Phoebe Laws (Year 10) have been selected for the Under 16 program while Ava Ryan (Year 10) has been selected for the Under 19 program.

Ciara wants to make the Australian team
Playing in both summer and winter programs, Ciara is in the Rovers Cricket Club junior and senior teams.  She has represented the Macleay Valley in the combined girls/boys team and was selected for competitions including the NSW Female Under 13’s State Challenge in the Country Sixers, the North Coast under 13 McDonalds Country Championships and was selected twice for the under 16’s North Coast Country Challenge team.  Ciara, who has been in the Country NSW North Coastal Zone Female Program for four years, says she loves cricket and her goal is to play for Australia. 

Cricket takes a lot of skill
Year 10 student Phoebe Laws has an equally impressive record. A member of both the junior and senior teams at the South West Rocks Dolphins Cricket Club, Phoebe was selected for the Combined High Schools North Coast State Challenge and captained the under 13’s team in the North Coast McDonalds Country Championships.  She has been in the Country NSW North Coastal Zone Female Program for five years.   Phoebe says she loves playing team sport.  She said that cricket, which takes a lot of skill, makes her feel more confident and she enjoys making friends at the different carnivals and training campus.

Ava excels
As the cricket season comes to an end, Year 10 student Ava Ryan is set for a well earned break. Ava has had a busy few months after she was offered an invitation this season to play with the Northern District Cricket Club based in Waitara, a spot in 1st Grade in the Sydney Women’s Premier Cricket. Ava has been travelling to Sydney each weekend to play, often returning early Monday morning for school. Other than the commitment made to Northern District, her place in the NSW Cricket Academy Female Pathways saw her Captain the Under 16s North Coastal team at Country Championships in December and return again in early January to Vice Captain the under 19s team. December also saw NSW Cricket run a Country vs Metro quad series, where Ava played for Country Thunder, designed as a trial to select the two NSW State teams. Ava was successful in selection for the ACT/NSW Country team traveling to Albury late January to play the Summer Quad Series against Victoria.

SOCCER STAR IN THE MAKING

St Paul’s Catholic College Year 8 student Jayden Swaine has been selected for the 2022 Northern NSW Football’s Talent Support Program (TSP). 

An invitation only program for the most talented players, it involves Jayden training each Monday in Port Macquarie with a group of players selected from the Mid North Coast Zone. The TSP benchmarks the players against other TSP players from Northern NSW Football. Each school holidays they compete in a tournament in Newcastle.  

Jayden was invited to attend an Identification Night and Elite match and session in Newcastle on Monday 23 May conducted by Northern NSW Football in partnership with the Newcastle Jets and Football Australia's National Teams Unit. This is part of a selection process for the NSW Football's National youth championship team representing Northern NSW. He has also been invited to attend a trial session to be considered for selection to represent NNSWF (Northern NSW Football) at the 2022 Singapore International Youth Cup.

STATE RECOGNITION FOR SHELBY

Congratulations to St Paul’s Catholic College Shelby Mitchell who has been selected as one of the final 30 applicants for the NSW Youth Advisory Council.

Shelby was flown to Sydney where she spent the day at the NSW Library and had lunch with Melinda Pavey MP.  The successful group will be announced in August. 

The NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC) plays an important role in advising the NSW Government on issues that are relevant to young people across the State.  Applications were sought from NSW children and young people between 12 and 24 years of age from diverse locations, backgrounds and life experiences. 

The 12 member YAC provides a direct avenue of communication between young people and the NSW Government.  The YAC meets regularly throughout the year to provide advice to the relevant Minister, and the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People, on issues, policies and laws that affect children and young people in NSW.

BEEF WEEK PRIZE BONANZA FOR ST PAUL'S STUDENTS

St Paul’s College Agriculture Students achieved terrific success at the annual Wingham Beef Week from 16 to 20 May.

Twenty students, from Years 7 to 11, camped at the Wingham Showground along with parents and Agriculture Primary Industries teachers, Graham Bramley and Mrs Frewen. 

The Wingham Beef Week Herdsman Award was won by Year 10 student, Isabel DeJager, while Reagan O’Donnell (Year 10) was runner up in the prestigious Bill Hobbs Award  for the best all-rounder. 

The St Paul’s College team achieved great results in all areas of the competition.

Junior Judging Competition
In junior judging, India Dowling, Year 11 and Linc McCarthy, Year 8 were given the opportunity to present their placings on the microphone in front of a large audience. Linc was very successful and went on to win his age group.

Live Judging on the Hoof
Our animals were successful in the live Judging and our cattle achieved the following awards.

• British White Class - Reserve Champion
• Lightweight Class 336 -370 kg  - 2nd Place
• Middleweight Steer 406 - 440kg  - Reserve Champion
• Heavy middleweight 441- 475 kg - 4th Place.

Carcase Judging
This segment of the competition is where St Paul's College had the most outstanding success when three out of five of our animals were judged champions in their class including:

•  Champion lightweight steer.
•  Champion middleweight steer.
•  Champion British white steer.

The champion lightweight steer is perhaps our most special win as it was won with a steer that was born and bred on the College Farm. This steer was also judged the Champion Steer prepared by a school. His handler, Isabelle Preston, Year 9, was ecstatic to receive the award as this was her first appearance at Wingham Beef Week.

Graham Bramley and Mrs Frewin extended their sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the week including:

• Nigel Flanagan, the College farmhand for his care of the livestock and his role in training the students each Thursday afternoon after school;
• Phil Clarke, for transporting cattle to and from Wingham beef week in his truck;
• Michael and Kylie O'Donnell for transporting equipment and general supervision;
• Sam Townsend and Sally Rosten for their excellent photographs of the team.
• Kimberley Latham, Michael Barber, Tanya Dowling and Clinton Shields who all gave up time over the week to help mentor and supervise our team of students.

It was a great team effort by the students, parents and staff of the College.

AGRICULTURE STUDENTS SHINE AT KEMPSEY SHOW 

The involvement of parents was a key factor in the outstanding success achieved by St Paul’s Catholic College Agriculture Team at the Kempsey Show held on 26 and 27 April. 

Twenty one students, from all years, participated in a variety of events designed to test their skills with varying aspects of beef production and exhibition. These include estimating live weight, preparing and parading them for exhibition and live judging. 

Isla Grafin Von Mengersen (pictured left) won first place in the 351-450kg Steer Class. The steer, which was also awarded Reserve Champion Led Steer of the Show, was purchased by the College from the Kinchela Cattle Company, owned by College parents Clinton and Anna Shields. 

Head of Vocational and Education Training at the College, Graham Bramley, said St Paul’s Ag team families provide wide ranging and ongoing support to the program. 

“This year we have had the privilege of preparing three Limousin Heifers on behalf of Colin and Lorna McGilchrist from Wallabadah.  These animals were prepared by Reagan O'Donnell Year10 , Rylee Barbour Year 7 and Charlotte Latham Year 7 and these animals placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their under 12 months class.  Two of the heifers went on to win Champion and Reserve Champion Limousin. The same two animals were also placed 2nd overall in the pair of heifers class of all the breeds of that age at the show”, said Graham. 

“We just couldn’t achieve the results we do without so many wonderful parents”.

Other notable achievements by the Ag Team at the Kempsey Show were: 

Wilton Townsend - Junior Judging Under 13 Years, 3rd place.
Lincoln McCarthy - 251 -350 kg Steer Class - 3rd place.
Harriet Shields - 351 - 450 kg Steer Class - 3rd Place.

Also achieving success at the Show were India Dowling who won the Teen Young Woman of the Year and Lilly-Rae Rosten who won the Junior Young Woman of the Year Award.

INNOVATIVE PROGRAM SEES STUDENTS EMPLOYED WHILE CONTINUING STUDIES IN AGED CARE

In an exciting first for St Paul’s Catholic College, Kempsey, four students have been offered Student Based Traineeships at Kempsey aged care facility, Vincent Court.

St Paul’s Principal, David Johns, said that the College has expanded its successful Vocational and Education Training (VET) program to include the Certificate III in Individual Support, Aged Care.

“Working in partnership with Vincent Court, our program not only enables students to be qualified to work in aged care and individual support when they leave the College, but has resulted in four students being offered paid employment at Vincent Court while they continue their studies”, said David.

Fourteen Year 11 students from St Paul’s commenced the course this year as part of their HSC studies. 

Kylie Bonney, Vincent Court’s Residential Services Manager, said the Student Traineeships were offered to four students whose work and relationship with residents has been outstanding.

The four students who have been offered the Traineeships are Shelby Mitchell, Hunta Crilley, Brooke Daniels and Emily Parmenter.

They will work as regular paid staff members, one day a week on an eight-hour shift.  Next year they will move to 32 hours a fortnight.   

Hunta said he was nervous about the interview process but very excited to commence what he hopes will be a long term career helping the elderly. 

Brooke said she is planning to study to be a registered nurse on completion of the HSC and then hopes to join the defence force as a nurse. 

College Principal, David Johns, said he was very proud of the 14 students who were forging a new career pathway for future students at St Paul’s. 

This new course complements the current VET courses offered at the St Paul’s Catholic College in Hospitality, Construction and Primary Industries.

Information about the Course
The Certificate III in Individual Support-Ageing is an HSC and ATAR approved course under Human Services with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).  

Anzac Day was commemorated by St Paul’s College students at ceremonies throughout the Macleay and at a special event at the College on Tuesday 26 April.

A large contingent of students marched in the Kempsey and Macksville ceremonies with students also participating in ceremonies in areas including South West Rocks and Crescent Head.  

The ceremony at St Paul's College was attended by all students.  A special guest was Army veteran and College parent, Gerald Hoskins.  Gerald, whose grandfather fought in World War II, served for 23 years in the army after joining in 1990.  Gerald, said that for him Anzac Day was a time to commemorate those who were lost and to celebrate the freedoms we have today.  He said his main message for students was to be grateful - be grateful for the freedoms you enjoy. 

He said he is a great advocate for careers in the defence forces as you create life-long, close friendship bonds in the forces.

It was the team's first opportunity to attend a show for over two years and for many of the students this was their first ever experience in competing in a cattle show competition. The extremely wet conditions did not detract from the Team's success or enthusiasm.

The awards they won included

• Champion and Reserve Champion led steer
• The Tom Lawson Memorial Trophy for a steer led by a junior
• Best Maintained team
• Best presented School Cattle Team

The Team also won first, second and third ribbons in the steer and pure breed classes.  The St Paul’s team will repeat the process on 27 and 28 April  at the Kempsey show and then the Macksville Show.  These events are a precursor to Wingham Beef Week which will occur in May.

Congratulations to our amazing Ag Team staff, Graham Bramley, Lisa Frewen and Nigel Flanagan for all their hard work and dedication to assist the students to prepare for the shows.

AGED CARE SUPPORT WORKER COURSE A FIRST AT ST PAUL’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Twelve Year 11 students from St Paul’s have commenced the course as part of their HSC studies which will see them graduate with a Certificate III in Individual Support – Ageing.

David Johns, Principal of St Paul’s Catholic College, said one of the unique features about the course is that the majority of both academic and practical classes will take place at Vincent Court.

David said that holding most of the classes onsite at Vincent Court will provide the students with the most realistic experience and best prepare them for the workplace.

“This unique partnership between Vincent Court and St Paul’s Catholic College will mean that students will be fully qualified to start their careers as Support Workers in the aged care sector when they leave the College”, said David. 

Kylie Bonney, Vincent Court’s Residential Services Manager, said the residents will benefit from the creation of this new intergenerational community and the course will promote aged care as a career in the Macleay.

Kylie, who is a aged care nurse with 20 years’ experience said that the aged care sector needs to be involved in training the future workforce. 

 “The course could also be an introduction to a career in nursing for the students”, said Kylie.

This new course will complement the current VET courses offered at the St Paul’s Catholic College in Hospitality, Construction and Primary Industries.  Teacher of the course, Ms Amanda Jones, felt that interest in the Certificate was strong and it is well placed to respond to an area of skill shortage.

“Headed by Graham Bramley, the College’s VET program continues to be well regarded due to the quality of its teaching staff and the exceptional standard of its innovative and high-quality programs and we believe the Certificate III in Individual Support will maintain these high standards”, said David.

David said there is a great deal to learn from older members of our community who are a fountain of wisdom from life experience.

The Certificate III in Individual Support-Ageing is an HSC and ATAR approved course under Human Services with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

FIRST MAJOR SPORTING EVENT FOR THE YEAR

It was a fun-filled day when St Paul's Catholic College staff competed with the students at the first major event of the year, the annual swimming carnival on Tuesday 22 February. 

The event was also full of meaning for both staff and students as the winning team is presented with the Warwick Clarke Memorial Shield.  The Shield is presented annually in memory of Warwick Clarke, son of Bruce and Maureen, who passed away as a result of a farming accident in 1978. Warwick was a Year 9 student at St Paul's.  The Shield also commemorates all students and staff who have passed away while a part of our College community.  This year, despite stiff competition from students, the staff team took home the Shield. 

Principal of St Paul’s College, David Johns, said the Shield recognises the importance of strong, supportive relationships founded in a sincere dignity and respect of both teacher and student.

OUTSTANDING RESULTS FOR ST PAUL'S STUDENTS

The College extends sincere congratulations to the class of 2021 and highlights many outstanding HSC results including:

• Strong course averages exceeding the state course averages in Food Technology, History Extension, Music 1, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Physics, Visual Arts, VET Construction.
• A number of subjects (22) producing Band 5 or 6 results: Ancient History, Biology, Community and Family Studies, English Standard, English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Food Technology, Industrial Technology, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Mathematics Standard 2, Mathematics Extension 1, Modern History, History Extension, Music, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education, Studies of Religion 1 unit, Textiles and Design, Visual Arts, VET Construction, VET Hospitaility.
• A number of subjects scored above the state percentages in Band 5 and 6: Above the state in Band 5%- Community and Family Studies, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Food Technology, Industrial Technology, Modern History, History Extension, Music 1, Textiles and Design, Visual Arts, VET Construction; Band 6- Mathematics Standard 2, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.
• Congratulations to the brothers Tom and Nat Fletcher on their Band 6 successes in Mathematics with scores of 97- Tom in Mathematics Standard 2 and Nat in Mathematics. Tom also scored wonderful Band 6 results in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education while Nat completed the Mathematics result in Year 10 as part of the College acceleration program.
• Congratulations to Chloe Wilson on her Band 6 result in Textiles and Design and to Ruby Falzon on her Band 6 result in Visual Arts.
